Shingles Vaccine

Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox and results in a painful rash.  Zostavax® is currently the only shingles vaccine approved for use in adults older than 50 years of age.  The vaccine is given as a one-time dose in your doctor’s office or pharmacy and can reduce your risk of developing shingles by 51%.  Your risk of getting shingles increases as you get older.  Therefore, the CDC currently recommends that everyone 60 years of age and older gets the shingles vaccine, even if they don’t remember having chicken pox.  Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about the shingles vaccine.
